Sono state utilizzate come luoghi di sepoltura per i cristiani dal II al IV secolo d.C., con oltre 50 papi seppelliti qui.<\/p><p>Il nome<strong> &#8220;San Callisto&#8221;<\/strong> si riferisce al Papa Callisto I, che fu sepolto qui nel 222 d.C. Le catacombe coprono un&#8217;area di circa 15 ettari e contengono migliaia di tombe sotterranee, dove venivano sepolti principalmente martiri, sacerdoti e laici cristiani.<\/p><p>All&#8217;interno delle Catacombe di San Callisto, ci sono diverse gallerie e cappelle, ricche di arte e affreschi antichi, tra cui scene bibliche, immagini di santi e martiri cristiani e graffiti.
