Why book Colosseum tickets online?

Visiting the Colosseum is one of the main activities in the city of Rome, for this reason it is easy to find long lines on the site to buy entrance tickets, especially in the central hours of the day. Let us remember that Rome is overrun by tourists all year round. One of the best ways to avoid the long queues is to buy your tickets online, choosing between priority entrances and guided tours.

The best time to visit the Colosseum is in the morning when it opens, between 8.30 and 10.30, or in the late afternoon between 17.00 and 19.00. It takes at least two hours, indicatively, for the visit.

Rome Colosseum and its surroundings – what to see

You cannot visit Rome without visiting the Colosseum, its arena, the underground, the Roman Forum and the nearby Palatine Hill. Luckily these attractions are very close to each other and easily reachable on foot, in a very short walk between monuments and ruins.

Underground of the Colosseum

The Colosseum, formerly called the Flavian Amphitheater, was equipped, in times following its original construction, with impressive underground areas, in which the “behind the scenes” of the fights took place. The underground areas were built by Domitian, through a system of tunnels and corridors . The undergrounds have been remodeled and restructured several times, and can now be visited only with a guide. The undergrounds have been remodeled and restructured several times, and can now be visited only with a guide. Booking for the full underground experience is therefore strongly recommended, to avoid spending the day at the ticket office.

The Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is located right in front of the Colosseum and can be reached by taking just a few steps. It would be a real shame to lose the visit of the Roman Forum for not having booked the entrance in advance! Inside the forum you will find yourself inside a real Roman city, with incredibly preserved ruins of streets, palaces and squares. You will be able to see the Arch of Titus, the Arch of Severino VII, some ancient Roman temples such as the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina.

Palatine

The Palatine is the ancient hill on which the very first nucleus, the oldest in the city of Rome, stood. In fact, the remains were found here of the ancient settlements of the Iron Age. Between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the Palatine Hill became the residential district of the Roman aristocracy, with incredible aristocratic residences, elegant and characterized by paintings, decorations and flooring of extraordinary value. The Palatine was the home of Augustus and later it was the seat of the imperial palaces, becoming the heart of the city. Here the Domus Aurea was built, the residence of the emperor Nero. The Domus Aurea was an impressive residential complex with sumptuous decorations, marbles, gold coverings and precious stones, remodeled and partly destroyed by the successors of Augustus.

Arch of Constantine

A few steps from the Colosseum, between the Circus Maximus and the Arch of Titus, stands the Arch of Constantine, the most imposing triumphal arch ever preserved to this day. The arch was built in honor of the emperor Constantine, to celebrate the victory against Maxentius in 312 AD.
